More About Andy
Andy was raised in New York State, but as a teenager felt drawn to explore his deep McKean family roots in the Scotch Grove and Anamosa areas. He returned to Iowa for law school, settled and started a solo law practice in Jones County, making his home and raising his family here for the last four decades. He is proud to represent the fifth generation of the McKean family to live in Jones County.
Andy and his wife, Connie, a native of Dubuque, have been married for 40 years and have lived in an historic home on the edge of Anamosa in Fairview Township since 1986. They are involved in their home community, where Andy can often be found playing piano for local events, at church functions, and in care centers and congregate meal sites. Connie was a three term member of the Anamosa School Board, serving as board president for three years. They are the parents of four adult children and are delighted to be the grandparents of four grandchildren, three little girls and one grandson.
Andy earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from the Oneonta State College, his master’s degree in community planning from the University of Rhode Island, and his Juris Doctor from the University of Iowa College of Law.
In addition to his public service, Andy practiced law in Anamosa for 35 years, retiring in 2015, and taught planning law courses at the University of Iowa’s graduate program in Urban and Regional Planning from 1978 to 1992. He and Connie also operated the Shaw House Bed and Breakfast in Anamosa for 14 years.
Andy was one of the longest serving Republican in the state legislature, until he made the decision to join the Democratic caucus due to his discomfort with many high profile Republican priorities and his deep concern about the direction Donald Trump is leading our country.
Andy wants to come back to the Iowa House to restore bipartisanship, civility, and problem-solving in the legislature so that we can protect our economy, our schools, and lower costs for hardworking Iowa families.
